Types of YouTube Ads


Within the Youtube platform, there are four main ad formats. They are:

Skippable in-stream ads


These ads play before, during, and after the video content. After 5 seconds of the ad being played, the viewer is allowed to skip the ad. As an advertiser, you only pay for the ad if the viewer chooses not to skip the ad or if they interact with the ad. The ad must be at least 12 seconds long but it’s recommended to keep them shorter than 3 minutes so you don’t lose their attention.

Non-skippable in-stream ads (including Bumper ads)


These function the same as the above. They play before, during, and after the video content, depending on what you specify, but these ads are 15 seconds shorter than skippable ones and as their name suggests, viewers will not be able to skip them. With non-skippable ads, you pay for every 1000 impressions an ad receives.


Bumper ads work the same way except they are only 6 seconds long. Because they’re so fast and the content has to be really snappy, they’re best used for awareness campaigns.

Video discovery ads (formerly known as In-display ads)


In-feed YouTube ads consist of a thumbnail image from your video with three lines of text describing it. The ad may appear in YouTube search results, near related YouTube videos, or on the YouTube mobile homepage. The ad is meant to entice YouTube users to click on it. 

Non-video ads (Overlay and Display)


YouTube also offers non-video ads for those who don’t have a smaller budget.


Display ads appear as an image on the right-hand sidebar and include some text and a CTA with a link to your website. 


In-video overlay ads, as their name suggests, appear as an overlay to video content from monetized YouTube channels. They appear as a banner and hover over the video content. Ideally, these ads will appear over relevant video content. Overlay ads are a great way to supplement other in-stream video campaigns.
